Safe Sleep

Safe Sleep is more than “back to sleep.” To be safe when asleep (whether at night or at nap time), a baby needs to be placed

  • on her back
  • in a crib or bassinette with a firm mattress and no blankets, pillows, or toys,
  • in a room that is not too warm,
  • in a home where no one smokes tobacco.

That may sound complicated, but the heart of it is quite simple.

Some families think that baby looks lonely in a crib without soft toys or blankets. But in reality, most babies are quite content, especially if they are snugly swaddled. Others may say that they know of babies who slept in a bed with adults, or on a pillow, without harm. Some do. But the reality is that about 10 healthy babies in Rochester, New York die every year in these conditions. There is no reason to risk a baby’s death when the alternative is so easy.
